The Vilcek Foundation honors the “multi-disciplinary contributions of immigrants to the U.S.” This year, the foundation hosted the 2019 Vilcek Foundation Prizes for the Culinary Arts. This highlighted culinary influencers who have transformed the food and drink landscape. The juror-selected $100,000 grand prize was awarded to none other than acclaimed Ethiopian-Swedish chef and restaurateur Marcus Samuelsson of Red Rooster. Congrats, Chef Marcus!

José Andrés’s Nonprofit Served 11,400 Meals to Furloughed Workers in One Day – Eater

His nonprofit provided more meals to Puerto Ricans in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in 2017 than any other group. Recently, the acclaimed chef and philanthropist fed more than 11,000 meals to furloughed workers. He opened a pop-up kitchen in D.C. during the latest government shutdown. The act of generosity morphed into a nationwide initiative. The gesture sparked hundreds of other eateries to serve free meals to government employees as well.
