Recap: The 2nd Annual Gather Gives Day

By Caroline Cox | 3 min read

Back in April 2018, the Gather team began a new tradition we dubbed Gather Gives Day. On a day in April (which happens to be National Volunteer Month), the entire team split up into several groups and completed volunteer shifts with nonprofit organizations around the city. We enjoyed the day so much that we decided to do the same thing again this year!

This time around, we volunteered with Trees Atlanta, LifeLine Animal Project, the Atlanta Community ToolBank, and Open Hand Atlanta. In the evening, just like last year, we ended the day with a team happy hour at a local venue participating in Dining Out For Life (we went with New Realm Brewing and had a blast!). For this event, various restaurants and bars around town donate 25% or more of that evening’s proceeds to support the work of Open Hand Atlanta.

Read on to hear from a few Gather employees about their experiences working with these incredible organizations and the impacts they made in just a few hours.

Open Hand Atlanta

Open Hand prepares, packs and delivers thousands of nutritious meals each day for those in need throughout the city. “I loved learning about Open Hand’s mission to empower people to live healthier lives through food,” says Malee Moua, Gather’s office manager. “We spent the afternoon packing meals and weighing out the perfect portions to cater to different dietary needs.”

Lura McCoy, one of our support associates, also volunteered at Open Hand. “It was a really fun activity for our larger team to work on in smaller groups,” she says.

Trees Atlanta

For a big city, much of Atlanta is surprisingly verdant. That’s thanks in big part to Trees Atlanta. Since the mid-1980s, they’ve worked to protect and improve Atlanta through planting, conserving, and educating others about trees.

“Trees Atlanta has contributed heavily to making sure that Atlanta continues to support the health and diversity of our urban forests,” says Kent Keirsey, Gather’s senior product manager. “Not only did I get to witness their commitment to that mission, but I also got to contribute to my own neighborhood and community! It was an awesome experience.”

Executive assistant Briana Eden felt it was “informative and beautiful to see the impact that trees have on our environment, and it was fulfilling to know that we had a chance to improve the landscape within the community.”

Brandon Perry, one of our client success managers, also loved volunteering with Trees Atlanta. “It was great to play a part in adding more greenery to the largest urban canopy in the country,” he says. “The fact that Gather wanted to take the time to give back to Atlanta says a lot about Gather’s commitment to its cultural values, as well as to this amazing city. I look forward to next year!” Gather software developer Eric Ruggieri adds that volunteering at Trees Atlanta was an “enlightening experience” for him.

LifeLine Animal Project

When picking organizations to work with, we couldn’t resist including those that support our furry friends. (We’re a dog-friendly office, after all!) LifeLine Animal Project works to end the euthanasia of healthy, treatable dogs and cats in local shelters. They offer adoption programs, low-cost spaying and neutering, and more.

Meg Hardy, one of Gather’s account executives, says “studies show that having dogs in-office can help reduce stress. Being at LifeLine and giving back to pups who haven’t been surrounded by a ton of love was not only de-stressing, but it made me feel like I was able to de-stress their lives too! Also, who doesn’t love some puppy kisses?”

Atlanta Community ToolBank

Lastly, some of Gather’s crew spent their time at the Atlanta Community ToolBank. This vital program lends tools and shares its resources with other charitable groups, equipping volunteers with what they need to efficiently complete their work.

“Matt and his staff were fantastic hosts,” Gather’s marketing operations manager Jeff Harris says of the ToolBank team. “Seeing firsthand the number of tools and resources the ToolBank Lending Program provides charitable groups around Atlanta was astounding. I’m glad we were able to chip in and learn more about their community impact.”

Not only does Gather Gives Day have a positive impact on our community, but it brings our team closer together. We can’t wait to continue the tradition for years to come!
